[toggle title=»Traducido Por Inma Jiménez»]Online activites, a benefit for business or an enemy? Social media is used a lot by businesses in order to connect even more with their clients and obtain feedback from them, so they can improve their products to the specific needs of the customers. Online activities are useful in order to promote products and gain name awareness. This sounds like a great benefit for a company, but there is also another side of this “great” tool. It’s all about reputation to make a brand or business successful. Although social media is a great instrument, it can be cruel when it comes down to damaging the reputation of a business on the internet. But what is actually the reputation of a company? It includes the ‘image’ and the ‘identity’ of the business. The image of a company is how the publics, relationships related to the business, perceive the company. The identity is designed by the company and includes how the company wants people to perceive them. This includes their logo, corporate title, colors and symbols used by the company . Ideally, the image and the identity of the company are identical, which means that the message the company wants to send to the publics, is actually interpreted in the way it was intended. But why can online activities be damaging? When a person search their name on the internet, mostly pages like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook pop up. Since these pages are from social networks, this is perfect to dig up some dirt about someone. The statistics confirm that 78% of the surveyed companies search for their employees online and base their decision of hiring a person on the positivity that the search brings. Therefore a well reputation online is of main importance for a successful personal career. This also applies to companies, if a negative article written by a dissatisfied client pops up when someone searches your company, this can be harmful for the corporate reputation. As a result this can mean a damaged corporate image and less new customers. An example of such a damaged image by online activities is Chrysler Group LLC. An employee of ‘New Media Solution’, which run the Twitter account of the car brand, send a tweet under the Twitter account of Chrysler which was meant for his own account. The tweet said that Detroit is known as the motor-city but no one actually knows how to drive. This tweet is very damaging for the reputation of Chrysler and got deleted only after a day. Chrysler will cooperate with another media firm once their contract with ‘New Media Solutions’ expires.
